Shahrul Nizam Supian
Director
AGV

Shahrul graduated in 1992 with a B.Eng degree in Mechanical Engineering from Huddersfield University, West Yorkshire, UK. He started his first job with a consulting firm but along the way he somehow caught the entrepreneurial bug. Being a practical man, he knew that he didn’t have enough experience to handle a business properly. That didn’t stop him though and he started making plans. Gaining business experience became his main agenda. He left the consulting firm soon after that and started his fast-track learning curve through several positions across several companies in different areas from management, operations to sales & marketing, improving his position up the corporate ladder while learning as much as possible about doing business and building up contacts.

In order to gain the necessary experience he even worked for companies which were on the brink of collapse. “You can definitely see management coming up with some very creative manouvers to keep the company afloat in those situations”, he said.

He negotiated with lawyers, bankers, suppliers, vendors - whatever it took to save those companies he worked for. Along the way he picked up valuable experience and contacts, locally as well as abroad. International trade, which caught his attention earlier due to its immense potential, soon became a passion.

Going through this “school of hardknocks” gave him the much needed experience and he went into business in 1996 by setting up a global procurement consulting firm with a slight twist. From day one he has used the Internet as the main medium of doing business, which was still unheard of at that time in that part of the world. Currently his network of contacts and associates spans the globe in all six continents with a satellite office in the Bahamas. He hasn’t looked back since.

Currently he sits on the Boards of Directors of a number of companies locally as well as offshore. He still dabbles in mergers & acquisitions although it is more for his own personal portfolio nowadays. Not bad for a 41-year old. You can see some of his business interests at www.axisnetonline.com and www.smartjv.com . He is always looking at other ways of doing business through the Internet as he believes in its potential.

His expertise in global procurement consulting and his wide business circle have enabled him to tap into another niche - Joint-Venture(JV) brokering. He brokers strategic JV deals between his clients and helps them enhance the value of their companies drastically through increased business volumes across the board. For those who have doubts about making money through JVs, he offers this challenge below -

“If I were to bring you business and customers that you don't have and would not have had, what percentage of the gross sales would you offer me? If I could show you how to make money from your existing resources, with no cost or risk to yourself and without any time spent, would you share the resulting profits with me?”

In 2004 he was appointed as a member of the Studies Board of the Mechanical Engineering Dept at the National University of Malaysia(UKM). The Studies Board is responsible for updating the contents of the course to make it more relevant and in-tune with the needs of industry and the business community. Naturally being an engineer and a businessman at the same time gives him an extra edge when it comes to business related matters. This appointment runs for 2 years each time and his appointment has already been extended twice - in 2006 and 2008. The latest extension will see him serving the Studies Board until 2010. He gives his time to the university voluntarily as he believes in giving back to society.
